PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The structural engineers and architects developed a design embracing sustainability, architectural vision and structural innovation. The Bishop Edward King Chapel’s elliptical geometry is used to best effect, allowing the construction of very high external walls which require no restraint at the top.
The vision of a slender timber structure is achieved through using appropriate connection systems which provide delicate joining of sub- and super-structure. Finger-jointing glulam beams, followed by shaping the edges to suit, has led to beautiful timber curves using outstanding ingenuity.
Judge's comment:
A deep understanding of the use of timber, and how to join it appropriately, has led to this magnificent structure. This chapel is clearly an inspirational building for its users, and this is down to extraordinary skills in designing and innovating with timber.
